Check both before you commit to a long render, especially on any project where Timeline Resolution was set for editing performance rather than final delivery size.

Why doesn't my vertical phone video fit a 16:9 timeline?
This is one of the most common versions of a resolution mismatch precisely because it isn't really about resolution at all, it's about orientation. A 1080x1920 vertical clip and a 1920x1080 horizontal timeline have the exact same total pixel count, just rotated 90 degrees relative to each other. No scaling preset covered above can fill a horizontal frame with a vertical source without either cropping most of the width off or leaving thick black bars down both sides, because the two shapes fundamentally don't overlap the way two same-orientation mismatched resolutions do.
If your entire deliverable is meant to be vertical, in the first place, for TikTok, Reels, or Shorts, the fix isn't a scaling preset at all. It's setting your project up for vertical from the start. Does this happen on XML or AAF imports from Premiere Pro or Final Cut?
